The way to take off of New Coal Gasification Technology in 30 years

On April 11, 2023, China's first coal-water slurry pressurized gasification device celebrated its 30th birthday at Shandong Energy Group Lunan Chemical Company. 

After 30 years of introduction, digestion and innovation, China's new coal gasification technology has jumped to the international leading level, opening up a way to take off for the clean and efficient utilization of coal in our country. 

Coal gasification is the core technology of clean and efficient utilization of coal, which is widely used in many process industries, such as coal chemical industry, power generation, hydrogen production, large-scale refining and chemical industry. The industrialization of Texaco coal water slurry pressurized gasification technology in the 1970s has greatly promoted the development of large-scale coal gasification technology. 

At that time, fixed layer gas generation technology was widely used in the field of coal chemical industry in China, which was backward, inefficient and polluting the environment. 

In 1983, with the approval of the former Ministry of Chemical Industry and the State Planning Commission, Shandong Lunan Chemical Fertilizer Plant, the predecessor of Shandong Energy Group, began to introduce the fifth set of coal water slurry gasifier technology in the world at that time and the first set of Texaco coal water slurry gasifier in China at that time. The plant was built in 1990 and completed successfully on April 11, 1993, which opened the prelude to the development of modern coal chemical industry in China. 

On April 11, 1993, China's first coal-water slurry pressurized gasification plant was completed and started successfully in Shandong Lunan Chemical Fertilizer Plant, the predecessor of Shandong Energy Group Lunan Chemical Industry. 

Although coal gasification technology has been introduced, the ownership of the technology is monopolized by foreign industrial giants. According to incomplete statistics, from the 1980s to the beginning of this century, foreign coal gasification technologies introduced from various parts of our country, the license fee for patent implementation alone is as high as more than 300 million US dollars, and many around the innovation of the imported technology, the inventors only have the right to use, but the patent right belongs to the patent owner of the technology. 

It seriously restricts the development of domestic technology. 

In order to break the monopoly barrier, during the Ninth five-year Plan period, the former Yanzhou Mining Group and East China University of Technology began to jointly develop coal gasification technology with independent intellectual property rights, through laboratory small-scale tests and cold model tests. the technical theoretical system and the flow field model of the gasifier are preliminarily determined; in 2000, the former Yanzhou Mining Group, East China University of Technology and China Tianchen Company jointly completed the industrial pilot test of multi-nozzle coal water slurry gasification technology and achieved ideal results. 

On July 21, 2005, the national "Tenth five-year Plan"863" key project-- the 1000-ton industrial demonstration device of the new coal-water slurry gasification technology with multiple nozzles was successfully put into operation, and the industrial demonstration device was enlarged 55 times at a time on the basis of the pilot test. 

At the acceptance meeting of the "863" project organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology on May 31, 2006, the members of the acceptance expert group unanimously agreed that the industrialization success of multi-nozzle coal-water slurry gasification marked the first time that China had a large-scale coal gasification technology with independent intellectual property rights. it breaks the foreign technology monopoly and is an important milestone in the history of coal gasification in China. 

With the support of the national "973" and "863" science and technology plans, the single-furnace daily treatment coal 2000-ton, 3000-ton and 4000-ton chilled multi-nozzle opposed coal water slurry gasification technology has completed industrial demonstration and realized industrial application one after another. it broke through the key technical bottlenecks such as large-scale, high efficiency and long-term stable operation of coal water slurry gasification. 

The appraisal meeting of scientific and technological achievements of "super-large coal water slurry gasification technology development and industrial demonstration of 4000 tons per furnace per day" organized by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, the experts at the meeting agreed that this technology has built the largest industrial plant for single furnace coal water slurry gasification in the world, and the main technical indicators have reached the international leading level. 

In order to better popularize and apply industrialization at home and abroad, Shandong Yankuang Guotuo Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shandong Energy Group, and Clean Coal Research Institute of East China University of Science and Technology have continuously improved the multi-nozzle coal gasification technology. Multi-nozzle semi-waste boiler chilling process technology and multi-nozzle dry pulverized coal gasification technology have been developed. 

The coal gasification process design packages such as petroleum coke and residue which are suitable for different raw materials are developed to broaden the raw material sources of coal gasification technology units, turn these by-products into treasures and enhance the utilization value. through the coupling of coal gasification technology and petrochemical refining and chemical projects, it provides a stable and low-cost source of hydrogen for refining and chemical projects, and broadens the application field of coal gasification technology.

Up to now, the multi-nozzle pressurized coal water slurry gas technology independently developed by Shandong Energy Group Co., Ltd. and East China University of Technology has been applied in 204 sets at home and abroad, and has also been exported to the United States, which was introduced in that year. 

It has been successfully applied in CNOOC, Shenhua Group, Dalian Hengli, Wanhua Chemical, Henan Xinlianxin, Hualu Hengsheng and other enterprises, accounting for about 35% of the global share of gasification technology, and the total coal input accounts for about 45% of the global gasification technology. The technology license and process software package design contract signed with Valero Energy Company of the United States has realized for the first time the export of more advanced similar technologies with fully independent intellectual property rights to the original technology-importing countries. 

The successful industrialization of the new coal-water slurry gasifier has witnessed the "dream journey" of Chinese independent coal gasification technology. 

Relying on scientific and technological innovation and indomitable courage and confidence, China's coal chemical workers have broken down foreign technical barriers, broke out the encirclement of technological monopoly, and fulfilled the technological dreams of several generations of coal chemical entrepreneurs.
