The 800,000-ton-per-year olefins project of Rongxin Chemical, a subsidiary of Shandong Energy Group, has officially started construction.

On July 14, the 800,000 tons per year olefin project of Rongxin Chemical invested and constructed by Shandong Energy Group officially started construction in Dalat Economic Development Zone, Ordos City. This is an important measure for the two provinces of Inner Mongolia and Shandong to jointly build a modern coal chemical industry cluster and extend the 'methanol-olefin-high-end new materials' industrial chain.

The project is located in Dalat Economic Development Zone, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, covering an area of 1,887 mu. It mainly builds an 800,000 tons/year methanol to olefin (MTO) unit, a 400,000 tons/year polyethylene unit, a 400,000 tons/year polypropylene unit, a 15,000 tons/year 1-butene unit and supporting public and auxiliary facilities. The project will use methanol as raw material and use MTO technology to generate polymerization-grade ethylene and polymerization-grade propylene monomers, and then produce high-density polyethylene and high-performance polypropylene products through polymerization, while producing 1-butene, isobutane, C₅+, MTBE and other products as by-products. It is expected to be completed and put into production during the '15th Five-Year Plan' period.

Inner Mongolia Rongxin Chemical Co., Ltd. is a coal conversion enterprise under Shandong Energy Group. It settled in Dalat Economic Development Zone, Ordos City in 2009. So far, it has completed an investment of 13 billion yuan, and completed and put into operation the first phase of the 900,000 tons/year coal-to-methanol project and the second phase of the 400,000 tons/year coal-to-ethylene glycol project. Since the project was put into operation in 2014, it has produced a total of 14 million tons of chemical products such as methanol and ethylene glycol, achieved sales revenue of 26 billion yuan, and paid 3.76 billion yuan in taxes and fees.

Relying on Shandong Energy Group's multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasification technology with independent intellectual property rights and world-leading level, Rongxin Chemical's first phase project built a single furnace with a daily coal processing capacity of 3,000 tons of water-coal slurry gasification furnace. During the '12th Five-Year Plan' period, it undertook two national '863 projects' and won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress in 2016 and the first prize of the Science and Technology Progress of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation in 2017. The second phase of the project has completed the world's largest 4,000-ton water-coal slurry gasification furnace with the largest daily coal processing capacity in a single furnace, which was included in the 2017 National Major Science and Technology Project.

In the future, Rongxin Chemical will actively respond to the new situation and new requirements of 'dual carbon', relying on the super-large water-coal slurry gasification platform to promote the continuous improvement of chemical product production capacity, promote the extension and upgrading of the 'methanol-olefin-high-end new materials' industrial chain, transform regional resource advantages into industrial and economic advantages, promote the high-end, diversified and low-carbon development of the coal chemical industry, form a large-scale industrial cluster, and strive to build a domestic leading coal-based chemical new material demonstration base and energy clean and efficient utilization industrial base.
